Slack

The Rhodes College Computer Science Department uses Slack to communicate with our students. We have a variety of channels on Slack for our classes and general announcements.

Signing up for Slack and our class channel

  • You can sign up at rhodes-cs.slack.com.
  • Once you sign up, you can interact with Slack through the website, but there are also stand-alone apps for your desktop and phone.
  • Then join the #comp-372-s22 channel.
  • I also suggest joining the #general and #announcements channels. You may also want to join #random.

Using Slack

I will use the Slack channel to post announcements to the class, but I find it’s also nice just to have a space where we can discuss course content, as well as post not-so-serious things as well.

Here are some good ways to use our Slack channel:

  • Post online resources you’ve found related to class (webpages, videos, etc). This can be anything from a walkthrough of an algorithm we’ve discussed in class that you found helpful, to a video of an application of some topic from class.

  • Ask general questions about course content (“Can someone remind me what Bayes’ rule is?”, “I don’t understand the difference between admissibility and consistency; can someone explain?”)

  • Post humorous things like jokes and memes. Yes, that’s totally fine, and I encourage it!

Using Slack anonymously

  • If you’re too shy to ask a question or post something publicly in slack, you can anonymize yourself by putting /anon before your message.

For example, you could post /anon How do I do a proof by induction?.
